Oh Canada...

So this past weekend, (St. Patty’s Weekend) my friends Martin, Kathleen, Tom and I made a field trip up to Mississauga, Ont. The purpose of the trip was to check out this bar/restaurant called 50 West that features over 100 beers on tap.

We had a great time I’d have to say. It was really nice getting out of town, even if it was only for a few a day and a half. We rented rooms at the Novotel on Hurontario St. 50 West is in a building that is actually connected by overhead walkway to the Novotel. So we didn’t even have to go outside when strolling from hotel to bar. Not that it was cold enough out to make a difference but the convenience is very nice...

Tom and I carpooled up, (Martin and Kathleen left earlier to do some visiting in Toronto), and checked into our hotel around 4 or so. We met up Martin and Kathleen and took a brief stroll around the block our hotel and bar were located on. Mississauga is a nice sized city, 750k people. There was wonder amongst us as to how it got this big, probably overspill from Toronto ? There were a few areas of construction going on, new high-rises were being built so evidently it is a growing city. We had reservations for 50 West at 6pm but decided to head over slightly early, which was no problem at all. We spent about 4 hours or so sampling various beers and ordering various appetizers. We also watched the Buffalo Sabres defeat the Toronto Maple Leafs in a hockey game. Between the 4 of us we managed to sample 20-25 some odd beers. There were some very good ones. I particularly liked the one Kathleen got that was a coffee porter... yum! Tom tried Paulaner’s Salvator (the original double-bock) which he liked so much he order it again, in a 30 oz glass! If you don’t know how big that is... well it’s big, it’s like a half pitcher or so... I didn’t drink as much as I would have liked, I had a headache that was bothering me much of the night and didn’t want to exacerbate things. But still I had a wonderful time.
The downside was the pool in the Novotel closed earlier than we thought. We were misinformed that it was open all night, and well it was not so our plans to go swimming afterwards fell through, sadly. That was a bummer because I really wanted to enjoy some swimming, because hey slightly tipsy hilarity would have surely ensued...

The next morning we checked out, had breakfast at this place (the name of which slips my mind) which had some really nice sized portions for breakfast. The sausages I ordered were big pieces, as was the bacon Kathleen had. I can appreciate that...

I think we have pictures of our tab which itemizes what we consumed, I will have to post that some time. This is an endeavor we will have to definitely try again, after all we only got 1/4 of the way through the beer list... heee. There are some pics available to me which I will try to get posted up here.

Cheers!
Jack
