This past weekend I watched a movie with my friends Jill and Tim, as we often do when I visit them. Jill and I took a stroll to the nearby Blockbuster looking for a few movies to rent and came across a Korean flick called Time which we decided to check out. Upon viewing the movie I decided to review it for my blog as it is a decidedly poignant movie, especially for me at this juncture in life.
Time is a drama directed by Ki-duk Kim that addresses how desperate people can be to feel loved and wanted. Following is a brief synopsis of the main thrust of the movie, I wouldn't really say this qualifies for any spoiler warnings as this summary is on the back of the DVD case. A young woman, Seh-Hee, feels that she no longer is beautiful to her boyfriend, Ji-Woo and one day suddenly disappears from his life. In an effort to rekindle the flame between them she gets plastic surgery to seduce Ji-Woo once again. During the 6 months it takes for her to heal from surgery Ji-Woo goes through some interesting attempts at dating but with his mind so consumed by Seh-Hee he never really enjoys any success. The movie is a haunting and disturbing reminder of how consumed we can be when it comes to love. Misplaced distrust and jealousy along with desperation are emotions that this movie deals with... things that we often see in headlines and things we may personally experience as well. I found this movie engrossing, though the beginning and end of the movie threw me for a loop and I am still digesting the movie and in particular those parts of the movie.
I found the movie enjoyable, but not in a conventional way. It's certainly not light entertainment fare, watch this movie only if you are looking for something that will make you seriously think...
